Jesus always looked beyond the numbers themselves. The master in Jesus’s parable of the talents rejoiced just as much over the two talents growing to four as he did the ten talents growing to twenty. Jesus also said the angels rejoice more over one coming to repentance than ninety-nine who need no repentance. (See Matthew 18:12–13.) Jesus rejoiced more over the two coins the poor woman gave than the large gifts from the wealthy. (See Mark 12:43–44.) You cannot judge the quality of a church or a person’s ministry simply by how many attend the weekend worship service. I have determined not to be impressed by numbers, especially our own. Weekend attendance can be one of the most unreliable indicators of the health of a church because looking at the raw numbers do not account for the condition of the soil.
